The reputation problem: is Goodman actually junk?

Ask around online and someone will tell you Goodman is cheap garbage. It is one of the most persistent opinions in home HVAC, and in our experience it is not fair.

The equipment quality is genuinely fine. Goodman is one of the most widely installed brands in North America, it is backed by Daikin, one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the world, and it carries a strong warranty. Parts are easy to source because the brand is so common, which means if something fails, almost any technician in Indianapolis can get what they need and fix it. That is a real advantage and it is worth more than most homeowners realize.


So where does the bad reputation come from? Our honest read is that it is a mix of three things: the brand is priced as a value option and people assume cheap means poorly built, it is so widely installed that you simply hear about more Goodman failures by volume, and, as we cover below, some of the frustration technicians feel about installing it gets translated into complaints about the equipment itself.

Drawback one: the units are physically large

Because Goodman installs are physically punishing, plenty of technicians in this market would rather not take those jobs. That is not a knock on the manufacturer, it is just the reality of what the work feels like in a tight space with an oversized unit.
